Ekimetrics Presents our first annual “Black in Data” night! As you may know, data science is a relatively new field with many universities only introducing data science degrees within the last couple of years. With only 4% of data scientists being Black, we aim to diversify the field by increasing awareness and accessibility to data science roles. This event is an opportunity for students to learn more about the field, hear from industry professionals, network, and win prizes. There will also be a résumé workshop where students are encouraged to bring their CVs and get real-time advice on what recruiters are looking for. By participating in this event, volunteers will create 300 resource filled literacy kits to be distributed to children of underserved communities across NYC during Jumpstart's Read for the Record day! Jumpstart’s Read for the Record is the world’s largest shared reading experience, celebrating early literacy and supporting children’s early language and social-emotional development. The annual initiative raises awareness of the critical importance of early literacy and access to inclusive, high-quality books through shared reading. This year, Jumpstart’s 19th Annual Read for the Record Day will be held on October 24th, 2024. Millions of people will come together that day to read Piper Chen Sings co-authored by award-winning actress and singer Phillipa Soo and Maris Pasquale Doran and illustrated by Qin Leng. Thousands of schools, libraries, and community organizations will celebrate early literacy by reading this empowering story of self-expression, overcoming self-doubt, and the ways family relationships can support us. To support preparations for our biggest event of the year, we are recruiting passionate volunteers to assemble 300 literacy kits and event materials on October 16th from 1pm - 3pm at the Jumpstart NYC Office: 505 8th Avenue Suite 303. The kits we assemble will uplift creativity and confidence in the children that receive them! Please make sure to bring your physical ID to present to building security at the lobby.
