When I arrived at Fordham University, I was excited–but also overwhelmed. As an international student adjusting to a new culture, I already had a lot on my plate. On top of that, I was constantly hearing about internships, networking, and building a “professional brand.” It felt like everyone already had a polished LinkedIn profile and a five-year plan, while I was just trying to figure out where to start.
I still remember the first time I stepped into the Career Center. After getting emails about their events, I decided to reach out for help. That one visit ended up changing everything.
That’s when I discovered Handshake, which quickly became one of my favorite tools. I started using it to browse internships, RSVP to events, and even book more advising appointments. It made the job search process feel less intimidating– like I wasn’t navigating it alone. I also took advantage of the resume review service, and the feedback I received helped me turn my generic document into a targeted, professional resume that actually got noticed.
Outside the Career Center, I also joined the Fordham Marketing Association and enrolled in the Advertising Readiness Certification Program. Working on redefining a brand with a team challenged me in ways classroom assignments never could. I learned how to pitch ideas, collaborate under pressure, and give professional feedback. These experiences gave me concrete examples to talk about in interviews, and the confidence to talk about them well.
When it comes to networking, I’ll admit– I’m afraid of it. The idea of talking to strangers about my goals was intimidating. But the Career Center’s networking events helped change that. I practiced introducing myself, learned how to ask the right questions, and even followed up with alumni I met. Slowly but surely, I built a network I could lean on. I also started messaging professionals on LinkedIn and was surprised by how many responded. Just a simple “I admire your work– could I ask for a bit of advice?” opened up some really insightful conversations.
Looking back now, I can see how far I’ve come. The Career Center didn’t just help me find internships or clean up my resume– it helped me grow into someone who’s confident navigating the professional world. If I could give one piece of advice to other students, especially those who feel unsure of where to start, it’s this: use the resources around you. They’re here for a reason. And the sooner you start, the more doors you’ll open.
