Our alumni spotlight this week is Ava Carreiro, who graduated from Fordham’s Gabelli School of Business with a major in Marketing earlier in May. Throughout her time at Fordham, she was part of the Marketing Scholars Program, played the viola in the Symphony Orchestra, served as a Digital Producer for The Fordham Ram newspaper, Vice Chair on the United Student Government Marketing Committee, and Co-President of the Health and Wellness Club. Currently, she is working as a Marketing Management Trainee in New York City!
How did you find this opportunity? Is it related to your major?
Yes; I majored in Marketing. This role succeeded my summer internship at L’Oréal, as a Marketing Intern on Maybelline’s brand engagement team.
What are/were you most nervous/excited about as you start(ed)?
I’m excited to learn more about different business functions within the company, as my program is rotational.
Did you do internships during your time as an undergrad?
Yes! My first internship was as a Marketing Intern for Merck, in the summer following my sophomore year. The next summer, following junior year, I was a Marketing Intern at L’Oréal on Maybelline’s brand engagement team.
What advice would you give others for the job search and application process?
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there! Cold message people on LinkedIn and schedule coffee chats with them. Not only does this expand your professional network, but you get to learn about various roles at companies you’re interested in and get advice from people who were in your position before. Also, don’t be too critical of yourself if you get turned down here and there. All you need is one offer, so try to trust the process and know you will be just fine!
In general, what are your future career goals?
I loved working within brand engagement during my summer internship and would love to get more experience with that kind of role. In general, I’m really looking forward to furthering my passion for digital marketing within the beauty industry!
